South Platt Street (Fox Hill) Park offers visitors year-round recreational opportunities. During the warm months, visitors can utilize sporting fields/courts and a playground. During the cold months, visitors can participate in sledding and skating on the seasonal ice rink. Park-goers at South Platt Street Park may also enjoy the sound and scenic view of the Saranac River just to the north.

Karen Donoghue3 years ago You planned out the trails and fishing pier nicely. Now I can go fishing more closely to my home. S.M. I like the idea of the spider web, the log pile, and the stepping cluster. Those are great new additions. H.C. Thanks for keeping the hill for sledding. It would be good to have different areas for different types of sledding. A.A.I like the idea of adding more picnic tables to sit and sometimes eat. L.T. I like the idea of the rain garden because I love the smell of fresh rain and fresh flowers. H.C.

James Cyphers3 years ago Great plan! Echoing Anne Bailey's thoughts a bit here on connectivity. I know there's no budget for building something like this now, but in the planning phase here, could the city work up some schematics on connecting this park to the Saranac River Trail across the river with a pedestrian/bicycle bridge? It would be great for residents on the north side of the river, and provide a gorgeous connection to the SRT. Maybe near one of the fishing piers? Keep this in mind during the design phase, so that there is a right of way carved out for the future. Thanks!

Scott Prenoveau3 years ago as part of the plan could the collective explore the PFD property and connect it to the Fox Hill property via a paved walkway with illumination and an emergency phone similar to what they have on the SUNY campus.. Fox Hill Park is the beartown of the city of Plattsburgh not to mention Rescue Hose #5..it appears that fox hill and fire companies have a shared history.. of course, in addition to just the safety aspect ..thank you

Thank you Ms. Bailey for your input!"I read with interest the article on upgrading the parks in Plattsburgh. While visiting my son in Colorado, I always enjoy a big nearby park. Their installation of an outdoor fitness court is very popular, part of a national network. Such a fitness court would also be popular here no doubt, installed in one or more of the parks. Since it is a national network/enterprise, there may be extra money for the specific equipment. As plans are made for the upgrades, please plant more trees, to shade play areas and picnic areas. The Melissa Penfield park is particularly welcoming because of the mature trees, just what the South Acres Park is totally lacking. It makes a big difference. Walk around on a hot summer day to appreciate the shade! Another welcome addition would be a riverside trail along the South river bank to make a loop with the Saranac River trail on the North side. A trail from the S. Catherine St. bridge along Fox Hill park, up the hill to the abandoned cemetery, over to Fort Brown and down to the “tree house” bridge behind the police station could use existing fisherman’s trails and public land. There it would connect to the popular trail on the North bank. Such a trail would also add to the recognition of historic sites on the South Bank which played an important role in the BOP. Each of sites of the 3 forts South of the city deserve attention, maintenance and an upgrade. They can easily become part of the overall plan to encourage more walking and biking around the city, and to celebrate our heritage."Anne Bailey

Thomas Lacey 3 years ago The City of Plattsburgh definitely needs a real nice outdoor basketball court. There is not one single decent basketball court in our city. You need a nice surface. Not black top. Also excellent outdoor collapsible basketball rims. Add lights too. I'm not sure of the best site. Maybe re-doing the South Acre's court or Peter Blumette Park. I could help in the design. I would also help with setting up leagues and tournaments.

Andre’ Lacombe3 years ago Please consider refinishing the courts for pickle ball. It is presently used but is badly cracked.This past winter I took my grandchildren sliding. It was extremely difficult to climb the hill when iced over. At the top by the fence was very icy and really difficult for footing when getting ready to sled down the hill. Stairs would help getting up and some sort of level area at the top to aid in getting ready to sled down. I think pickleball courts should be considered for all the parks as its popularity has really grown.

Amanda Suriel3 years ago I love all of the new ideas and appreciate that the space is being revamped to be inclusive.My children and their friends love sledding at Fox Hill. We also use the baseball fields which are unfortunately poorly maintained. The playground is unsafe to play on and after two summers of contacting the City, no changes have been made.We know that youth development is critical to keep kids on the right path. Let’s do better by them. Taxes have gone up every year. Every year we fail our children when we do not invest in their futures. They’ve lost the Rec center and the Crete center. Let’s make sure their parks are safe and fun to visit.

Kathryn Alton3 years ago I am commenting here because the link for Peter Blumette Park will not allow me to submit...I love a lot of the natural landscaping and greenspace. I am crushed that we are losing multiple slides and that there won't be any swings. I have two toddlers and live one block away from the park. We go almost every day in the summer. My girls love to swing and slide. Although some of the newer style playground equipment looks cool and fun, they struggle to actively play on it for extended periods of time. They want to climb, slide, and swing. Items like the "sol spinner" only allow for one person to use it at a time compared to the large bank of swings that are currently there. I am feeling so sad about this. Why does this park not have a traditional play structure? I feel that the sensory wall will not be used by many children and does not allow for the gross-motor whole body play that kids need/want.

unknown author3 years ago Well done City of Plattsburgh! I love the dog park and the walking trail. The walking trail is a great use of space and needed in the back lot. Not to mention the renewed focus on the Saranac River - I LOVE THIS. My concern are maintaining the upkeep of the current park; again making sure our parks are clean and the focus. Also, the safety at Fox Hill is at times sketchy, my hope is the new trail will clear this up - perhaps lighting back there?All fantastic proposals and I cannot wait to watch as the phases begin.

Donald J Cosgro3 years ago Unlike many parks in the city, this one is heavily used in the winter. It offers sledding on the steep hill. Some years ago, the city removed the stairs that allowed children and adults to safely reach the top of the hill. Was at park after a snowfall in Feb. with grandchildren, and fresh snow over an icy base, made walking up the hill dangerous. Widening the start area near the chain link fence would also be a welcome safety improvement. Let think about what to do in the Winter also. Outdoor skating area with a refrigerated underlayment would be a welcome addition to any city park. Between the many school districts, college, and city and town parks, there are plenty of ball fields to choose from.

Michelle Roseberry Drollette3 years ago The playground equipment is for toddlers. There are a lot of young children that are too old for this as well as teenagers that live near this park. The basketball courts have holes that water pool into. It is used for sledding but it is dangerous at the bottom of the hill, perhaps more padding on the building, so children do not get injured (my nephew had a concussion several years ago after his sled ran right into the building. And perhaps more patrols, there are people living under the bridge and I am not sure how safe this park is along with the not very much lighting when it gets dark out early.

Jeremy McCallister3 years ago Overall, the Fox Hill Master Plan looks exciting! What is the City's plan to help prevent damages/vandalism like what just happened to the South Acres building? If the city and its residents are investing in our parks, has the installation of security cameras been discussed? It would only be a matter of time before this would happen to one or more of the upgrades listed within these Master Plan's. I would like to believe the city and its residents would feel comfortable knowing there is the opportunity to capture these vigilantes rather than be left paying to repair and/or replace said damaged items with little to no knowledge of the suspects.Adirondack Chairs are nice and all but how practical is that for our senior citizens and/or residents suffering from disabilities? With how low they sit to the ground, would you agree that it would be difficult for these individuals to lift themselves out of these chairs. What about some Adirondack Rockers?Lastly, it would be nice to see our sports fields with better upkeep. How many baseball fields are supposed to have grass growing through the infield's dirt? The answer, none. Not only an eye sore, but a safety hazard as it increases risk of injury.

Diane Sabourin3 years ago With the planned updates to parks and the new paths throughout the city, I would love to have the opportunity to purchase a plaque for a bench in memory of a family member. Other areas have this as a standard, I have seen them in the Finger Lakes, Burlington and various parts of the state. Burlington even has a form on their website to purchase one. On my frequent walks around the city, I have noticed that there are some benches-particularly near the downtown parking lot and the former farmer's market-that have plaques on them. There once was the opportunity to puchase bricks near the Kent Delord House but that seemed to stop. Any ideas?

Kim Cummins3 years ago I like the idea of having more natural walking paths that run along the water. You can tell near the bridge that people have made their own paths down to the water. It will be nice to make this more accessible to members of our community.Can we ensure there are proper waste disposal areas near the fishing areas? I have completed little cleanups near the fishing location near the water treatment plant. There was a lot of fishing line, packaging, and waste form the people fishing.Is there a way that the basketball court or other area could become an outdoor rink during the colder months?Could we also make a mural on the DPW building?
