Saranac River Trail Phase III Project

Project Summary

The City of Plattsburgh is advancing the Saranac River Trail Phase III Project (PIN 7806.61), the third and final phase of the City’s planned waterfront trail system along the Saranac River.

Phase III will complete a continuous multi-use trail connection between the existing Plattsburgh Riverwalk, Bridge Street, Green Street, and Peace Point Park. This project will provide improved bicycle and pedestrian access to the Saranac River and Lake Champlain waterfront, while enhancing safety and mobility along key downtown corridors.

The project is being administered by the City of Plattsburgh with oversight support from NYSDOT Region 7 and coordination with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Funding has been awarded through the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).

Project Goals and Improvements

The Saranac River Trail Phase III Project will enhance recreation, transportation connectivity, and waterfront access through improvements including:

• Construction of an approximately 0.6-mile trail connection consisting of both on-road and off-road facilities
• Installation of two designated bicycle lanes along Bridge Street
• Addition of high-visibility pedestrian and bicycle crossings and ADA-compliant curb bump-outs at key locations
• Shared roadway signage and pavement markings along Green Street to support bicyclists and pedestrians
• Construction of a new 10-foot-wide asphalt shared-use path connecting Green Street to Peace Point Park
• Realignment and grading improvements to the Plattsburgh Heritage Trail and improved trail crossings
• Enhanced waterfront access and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors
